Within the last week, the Chinese Communist Party has removed several ranking members of its government. Defense Minister Li Shangfu, ex-foreign minister Qin Gang was expelled from the cabinet, Science and technology minister Wang Zhigang, and finance minister Liu Kun were all removed from their positions.

As quickly as these presiding members of the government were removed, new incumbents were announced. For China, this move is the continuation of a year-long shakedown the CCP has been pursuing in an effort to redress domestic challenges.

While this systemic transition might conventional appear as a loss of efficiency and faith in the current government, this could also be the unavoidable byproduct of a very deliberate political strategy. How other states will interpret this and choose to act remains to be seen.
