MARCH 12, 2024

Welcome back to Asia & The Pacific Brief, where we spotlight pivotal global dynamics. Today, we’re focusing on the strengthening alliance between India and Japan, a partnership poised to reshape the Asia-Pacific’s geopolitical landscape amidst China’s growing influence. This collaboration, rooted in shared democratic values and strategic interests, not only bolsters regional stability but also offers a robust counterbalance to Beijing’s ambitions, marking a significant shift in power dynamics.

Of late, the Asia-Pacific region has witnessed a significant shift in power dynamics, largely attributed to China’s burgeoning influence across economic, military, and geopolitical spheres. As Beijing continues to assert its dominance, neighbouring countries are increasingly seeking strategic partnerships to counterbalance China’s sway and uphold regional stability. Among these alliances, the burgeoning collaboration between India and Japan emerges as a pivotal force reshaping the geopolitical landscape of the Asia-Pacific.

India’s Foreign Minister, S. Jaishankar, was on a three-day diplomatic visit to Japan, where he met his counterpart, Kamikawa Yoko, on March 07, to discuss such issues.

India and Japan have begun a path of increased cooperation in various areas because of their shared democratic principles, historical connections, and dedication to maintaining a rules-based international order. Cooperation in the fields of security and defence is where this partnership really shines, as it is characterised by a convergence of strategic objectives and shared security concerns. In response to China’s military aggression, the foreign ministers of Japan and India have reached an agreement to strengthen bilateral security cooperation. This includes transferring technology and purchasing defence equipment.

Moreover, the collaboration between India and Japan extends beyond traditional security domains to encompass emerging frontiers like space exploration and cybersecurity. By cooperating in these areas, both countries aim to strengthen their position against evolving threats and contribute to the maintenance of a stable and secure regional environment.

The power dynamic in the Asia-Pacific region might be drastically altered by the increasing alliance between Japan and India. Working together, these two great democracies provide a strong alternative to China’s rising influence thanks to their large economies and strong militaries. India and Japan can help neighbouring states like the Philippines—which is dealing with its own border concerns with China—and themselves by bolstering their strategic alliance.

However, it must be stressed that the alliance between Japan and India is not targeted at any particular nation. The real motivator here is a common desire to see inclusive development, sovereignty respected, and international law respected. Consequently, the joint efforts of Japan and India provide a positive way forward for cultivating a harmonious and affluent Asia-Pacific area, defined by trust, unity, and collaboration.
