PiS party’s election loss reflects concerns over corruption and rights.
October 20, 2023
Justice and Law Party (PiS), Poland’s incumbent party since 2015 seems to have lost the election despite obtaining the 37.2% of the votes. PiS seems to be weakened and consequently lost the election although having a massive state and media apparatus supporting the party and its elites. In the Polish opposition bloc, there are four parties/alliances: “Civic Platform (KO), The Left (Lewica), Third Way (Trecia Droga) and Konf (Konfederacja)”. KO obtained 28.9% of the votes, Lewica obtained 8.3%, Trecia Droga obtained 14.4% and Konf obtained 7.3% of the votes.
The incumbent party PiS lost its popularity due to a couple of reasons such as corruption, erosion of rule of law norm, LGBTIQ rights and abortion rights in Poland. All of these reasons brought an end to the ruling party’s eight years of controversial and autocratic rule in Poland.
EU was also concerned about the situation and erosion of the common and universal values such as democracy, human and LGBTIQ rights, rule of law and PiS government’s unilateral foreign policy. The incumbent PiS party is now an opposition party confirmed by the latest result of the election, PiS and Konf could now have a maximum of 211 seats and on the other hand three opposition parties now have 249 seats in the Parliament.
Civic Platform’s leader and the opposition bloc’s de facto leader Donald Tusk is the former Prime Minister of Poland and former European Council President and now an ambitious politician devoted to the cause of breaking the ice and repairing the EU-Polish relations in his forthcoming and possible position as the Prime Minister of Poland.
