Global responses to Israel-Hamas conflict and calls for peace.
October 20, 2023
The initial reaction from the Western World was tending towards a pro-Israeli perspective. Countries like Russia, China and Türkiye adopted more cautious policies towards the current situation in the region. The USA presented its “rock-solid and unwavering” support to Israel and sent largest aircraft ship in US possession Geral R. Ford aircraft carrier to the aid of Israel and US President Biden visited Israel in Tel Aviv and met President Isaac Herzog and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to show US support to Israel.
UK and Germany also sent aid to Israel. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also supported Israel unconditionally by visiting the region and determining the EU bloc’s stand in face of the war in the region with a rushed and premature decision.
However, pressure from the international community forced some of the Western leaders to rethink their stance in face of the mounting number of civilian casualties because of Israeli offensive in the region. Unlike other leaders, Turkish President Erdogan seems to be one of the few leaders who followed a more reconciliatory approach and called for international institutions, actors, and states not to punish Palestinian people by cutting the international humanitarian aid to Palestine.
Erdoğan also called for a cease fire between parties and urged them into solving their problems by negotiating on the table. Furthermore, worldwide events, protests that support Hamas took place in European capitals such as Vienna, Paris, Rome, Berlin, Istanbul, London, and Brussels.
