Spain is in a political turmoil and a delicate position because of the controversial agreement signed by Pedro Sánchez last week to haul the support of Catalan Separatists – Junts Party to give its consent to Sánchez’s Party – Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) to form a government. Sánchez decided to agree with Catalans since after the elections in Spain no party has gained majority of the votes in July 2023.

In exchange for Catalan Separatists – Junts Party’s support to form a government in Spain Sánchez apparently agreed to propose a law granting an amnesty to everyone involved in the failed 2017 Catalan Independence Referendum. After this decision, Spain has seen some protests in Madrid with the participation of 80.000 people criticizing Sánchez’s decision.

EU and some mainstream parties in the European Parliament are not too happy with this decision. European People’s Party (EPP) Group, the biggest group in the European Parliament, criticizes Sanchez’s decision by saying that it may harm the norm of ‘rule of law’ in Spain, since a Prime Minister is trying to haul the support of Catalans to strengthen his position and to form a government. EPP also criticizes the extension of this large amnesty, and it stresses out the importance of norm of ‘rule of law’ in Spain as it might fade away with breaking down of the separation of powers. EPP warns Spain as this case has been encountered before in Poland in where the boundaries of judiciary or the legislative power is unknown.
