Welcome to China Brief, where we examine global events. China urges restraint amid Gaza conflict, USA initiates Operation Prosperity Guardian, and Houthi attacks heighten Red Sea tensions.

Last year, in response to Hamas’s attack on Israeli citizens, the IDF launched an invasion of Gaza, which triggered the axis of resistance to retaliate against Israel in support of Palestinians.Houthis have started attacking ships transporting through the areas in the vicinity of the Red Sea.

While the USA and its western allies launched Operation Prosperity Guardian, China has been reluctant, despite having a military base in the region, to involve itself militarily in the conflict. Instead of kinetic escalation, Beijing has asked for restraint from all parties and asked Israel to end its brutal invasion of Gaza.

Amidst the ongoing tensions, the international community closely monitored the situation, recognizing the potential for further escalation and the need for a comprehensive approach to address the multifaceted conflicts in the region. The United Nations, along with various diplomatic channels, actively engaged in efforts to facilitate dialogue between conflicting parties and promote a peaceful resolution.

The maritime security challenges posed by the Houthis’ attacks on ships in the Red Sea became a focal point for global discussions. Concerns over the impact on international trade and stability in the region prompted diplomatic initiatives aimed at finding a consensus on ensuring the safety of maritime routes and preventing further disruptions.

In parallel, regional actors played a crucial role in shaping the trajectory of events. Some neighboring countries intensified their diplomatic efforts to mediate and de-escalate tensions, recognizing the interconnected nature of the conflicts and the importance of fostering cooperation for lasting stability. The complex interplay of military, diplomatic, and regional dynamics underscored the intricate nature of resolving conflicts in this volatile geopolitical landscape.
