Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is in the USA to chair a high-level meeting of United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on the Palestinian-Israeli issue while China holding the rotating presidency of the council this month. Wang Yi on Tuesday called for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and implementing a two-state solution as soon as possible with expressing respect to the UN’s leading role in solving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, said in his meeting with Secretary General of United Nations Antonio Guterres. Guterres also spoke very highly of China’s constructive role as the rotating president of the UNSC.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi highlighted the importance of the ceasefire to reach a complete effectiveness to prevent further humanitarian disasters. He also reiterated the necessity of the release of all hostages from both sides according to official releases. Afterwards, he said that an unhindered access of humanitarian aid and supplies to Gaza must be ensured. China also supports a two-state solution to address the root causes of Palestinian-Israeli conflict and find a durable solution.

China’s policy towards Palestinian-Israeli conflict differs from the Western discourses which prioritizes Israel over Palestine. Western countries until the human tragedies in Gaza were interpreting the crisis/war via a single perspective. Furthermore, Hamas is known as a terrorist organization and do not represent Palestinian people, but Western discourses gave Israel too much space to exert its power and with this way they were not able to interpret Israeli government’s underlying motivations. Understanding the underlying motivations of states and mind of politicians might be challenging, for instance China seems to support Palestinian cause and two-state solution for the region. However the question is, does it support this cause because it perceives Palestinian cause as a struggle of an oppressed community of people or because of the fact that Israel is supported by the USA?
